What data we collect
New Haven Navigator is designed to protect your privacy. We do not require any personally identifiable information (PII) such as your name, email, or address to use the directory, and we never ask for your immigration status or Social Security number. Some features do use data you provide: if you search, chat, or call, the words you type or say are logged briefly (see below); and if you ask us to text a resource to a phone number, we store that number only to send the resource and one follow-up message, then delete it within 90 days.
What we do collect:
- Anonymous page views: which pages are visited (not who visits them)
- Anonymous feedback: when you mark a resource as helpful or not helpful
- Saved items: if you save resources, your entries are stored in your browser and optionally synced to our server using an anonymous identifier
- Search and chat: contact details are removed from queries before storage, and especially sensitive queries are replaced with a general need category. The minimized record is deleted after 30 days.
- Phone hotline: if you call our hotline, the call is handled by a voice service that creates a text transcript (without your name) to improve the service. It is deleted after 90 days.
Text messages (SMS)
Text delivery is active through NHV Navigator SMS Line, the texting service operated by New Haven Navigator. New Haven Navigator is owned and operated by Navigator Technologies LLC.
We text only when you ask us to. Two-way operational SMS support is available in English and Spanish only. Both the website opt-in and the phone-hotline verbal-consent path are live:
- Website (live): on a resource page, you tap “Text this resource to a phone,” enter your own U.S. mobile number, and deliberately check a separate SMS-consent box that is unchecked by default.
- Phone hotline (live in English and Spanish): after the assistant finds a resource, you may ask to receive it at the mobile number you are calling from. The assistant must read the complete disclosure published on our Texting page and receive an explicit yes before sending. We store the Vapi call ID with the referral so the verbal consent can be linked to the 90-day call transcript. SMS keywords are not an initial opt-in method.
For each approved opt-in path, we send only the single resource message you requested, plus at most one follow-up to ask whether you were able to connect. Every initial message includes “Reply STOP to opt out.” We use your number solely to send the requested information and delete the referral, consent metadata, phone number, and linked call transcript after 90 days.
Third-party services
- Vercel: hosts our application and provides basic analytics
- Supabase: stores resource data (not personal data)
- Anthropic (Claude): processes chat and phone assistant queries
- Vapi: powers the phone hotline (voice-to-text)
- Twilio: sends requested text messages
- Resend: sends email when you use the contact or suggestion forms
- Sentry: monitors technical errors (no personal data)
Data retention
Saved data is stored in your browser and can be deleted at any time by clearing your browser data. Minimized search/chat records are deleted after 30 days; call transcripts and any phone number you give us to send a text are deleted after 90 days. Page views are anonymous and kept in aggregate.
Your rights
You can delete your saved data at any time by clearing your browser’s local storage. To request deletion of server-side data, contact us through our contact form.
