What data we collect
New Haven Navigator is designed to protect your privacy. We do not require any personally identifiable information (PII) such as your name, email, or address to use the directory, and we never ask for your immigration status or Social Security number. Some features do use data you provide: if you search, chat, or call, the words you type or say are logged briefly (see below); and if you ask us to text a resource to a phone number, we store that number only to send the resource and one follow-up message, then delete it within 90 days.
What we do collect:
- Anonymous page views: which pages are visited (not who visits them)
- Anonymous feedback: when you mark a resource as helpful or not helpful
- Saved items: if you save resources, your entries are stored in your browser and optionally synced to our server using an anonymous identifier
- Search and chat: the words you type into search or the AI assistant are logged without your name, to help us find gaps in the directory. They are deleted after 90 days.
- Phone hotline: if you call our hotline, the call is handled by a voice service that creates a text transcript (without your name) to improve the service. It is deleted after 90 days.
Text messages (SMS)
Text delivery is currently disabled while carrier registration is completed. We do not send SMS messages or collect phone numbers for SMS at this time.
If text delivery is activated, we will text only when you ask us to, and only to a number you give us yourself. Two-way operational SMS support will be available in English and Spanish only. There are two ways this may happen:
- By phone: while you are on a call with our helpline, you ask us to text you details about a resource and give your number; the assistant confirms before sending.
- On the website: you tap a “text me this info” button on a resource page and enter your own number.
If activated, we will send only the single message you requested, plus at most one follow-up to ask whether you were able to connect. Every message will include “Reply STOP to opt out.” We will use your number solely to send the requested information and delete it after 90 days.
Third-party services
- Vercel: hosts our application and provides basic analytics
- Supabase: stores resource data (not personal data)
- Anthropic (Claude): processes chat and phone assistant queries
- Vapi: powers the phone hotline (voice-to-text)
- Twilio: will send requested text messages after carrier registration and activation
- Resend: sends email when you use the contact or suggestion forms
- Sentry: monitors technical errors (no personal data)
Data retention
Saved data is stored in your browser and can be deleted at any time by clearing your browser data. Search/chat words, call transcripts, and any phone number you give us to send a text are deleted after 90 days. Page views are anonymous and kept in aggregate.
Your rights
You can delete your saved data at any time by clearing your browser’s local storage. To request deletion of server-side data, contact us through our contact form.
