About This Resource

A parent who cannot care for a newborn can hand a baby 30 days old or younger to the nursing staff of any hospital emergency room. The parent will not be arrested for abandonment and does not have to answer questions. The baby goes into DCF's care.

How to Get Help

Bring the baby to any hospital emergency room and speak with a nurse. For questions afterward, call the DCF Careline.

Before you go

  • •If you change your mind, contact DCF as soon as you can. Your rights can end at the first court hearing.
  • •This does not protect a parent from arrest if abuse or neglect has occurred.
